Adjusting E-5000
Yard Hydrant Packing

Customer Support | Troubleshooting Guide

A simple guide to stop leaks around the packing nut.

Before You Start

You do not need to shut off the water for this adjustment. Move the handle up and down while adjusting the packing nut.

Don't Dig Up Your Yard Hydrant!

Packing leaks can usually be fixed from the hydrant head. Digging may be needed only if the valve body or standpipe is damaged.

What You'll Need

One 7/16" wrench

How to Fix It

  1. Find the Packing Nut

Location of the E-5000 packing nut below the pivot connector

Locate the packing nut at the top of the hydrant head, just below the pivot connector.

  2. Tighten by ¼ Turn

Tightening the E-5000 packing nut clockwise with a wrench

Tighten the packing nut clockwise ¼ turn while moving the handle up and down a few times.

  3. Check and Repeat

Moving the hydrant handle and checking the packing nut for leaks

If it still leaks, tighten another ¼ turn while moving the handle. Check for leaking between adjustments.
