Choose a threaded ball valve for threaded fittings, an insert ball valve for poly pipe, and a PVC slip or threaded ball valve for PVC systems.
A full-port ball valve has a larger opening through the ball, helping maintain water flow with less restriction.
Brass works well for most well and pressure-tank systems. Stainless steel suits corrosive or demanding conditions, while PVC fits PVC water lines and irrigation systems.
The leak may be coming from the valve stem or packing area. A slight packing-nut adjustment may help, but a damaged or worn valve may need to be replaced.
Do not force it. A valve that has sat unused may seize, and excessive force can damage the handle or stem. Replace the valve if it cannot be operated safely.
