Drive Well Point
Installation Guide

Shallow driven well systems

Cast iron drive point with stainless steel screen

Over perforated pipe.

Before you start

Match the materials

Select a matching 1-1/4" or 2" well point, galvanized pipe, drive couplings and proper drive cap.

Check site & safety

Verify water-table depth, soil suitability, local well rules and buried utilities. Wear eye and hand protection.

4 simple steps

  1. Bore the starter hole

Use a post-hole digger or hand auger to make a 3–6-inch diameter starter hole, approximately 2–3 feet deep.

  2. Attach pipe & drive cap

Remove the plastic screen protector. Attach galvanized pipe to the point with a drive coupling; tighten with two opposing wrenches. Install the drive cap.

  3. Drive & add pipe

Keep the point vertical. Strike the drive cap only, using a sledgehammer or post driver. Add pipe with drive couplings. Continue a few feet into the water table.

  4. Clean & connect the pump

Surge or flush to clear debris. Attach and prime the surface pump per its instructions; keep all joints airtight. Test the water before drinking.

Drive coupling and drive cap sold separately.

ImportantMerrill recommends a maximum drive depth of 30 ft; surface pumps lift only 20–25 ft.

Follow local construction, disinfection and water-testing rules.
