E-5000 Yard Hydrant Leaking From the Drain Hole?

E-5000 Yard Hydrant

First, check whether the hydrant leaks while running or continues to leak after shutoff.

Before you start

Leaking when on

The plunger may sit too low to close the drain hole while water runs. Move the pivot connector up slightly.

Still leaking when off

The plunger may sit too high to shut off the water supply. Move the pivot connector down slightly.

Tools you’ll need

One 7/16-inch wrench.

How to fix it

  1. Find the adjustment bolt

    Find the adjustment bolt

Locate the hex-head bolt just below the handle that holds the pivot connector in place.

  2. Loosen the bolt

    Loosen the bolt

Use a 7/16-inch wrench to loosen the bolt just enough for the pivot connector to move.

  3. Adjust the connector

    Adjust the connector

If the hydrant leaks while on, move the pivot connector up slightly. If it keeps leaking while off, move it down slightly.

  4. Tighten and test

    Tighten and test

Retighten the bolt. Turn the hydrant on, then off, and check for leaks. Repeat if needed.

Still leaking?

Repeat the adjustment in small increments and test each time. Most adjustments can be made from the top. Digging is generally needed only if the valve body or standpipe is damaged.
