Protect Your Hydrant Installation

Yard Hydrant Sleeve

How It Works

  1. Attach the Coupling

Thread the stainless steel hydrant coupling into the yard hydrant valve body using thread tape and sealant.

The coupling threads into the bottom of the hydrant valve body.
  2. Insert Into Sleeve & Elbow

Lower the yard hydrant into the PVC sleeve and thread it into the stainless steel street elbow until fully seated.

The hydrant rotates as it threads into the elbow inside the sleeve.
  3. Seal the Top & Connect

Slide the two-piece top cap and O-ring down the hydrant pipe, press the cap into the sleeve, and connect the assembly to the water supply piping.

The top cap slides down the hydrant pipe into the sleeve opening.

Concrete shouldn’t make hydrant repairs hard.

The Merrill Yard Hydrant Sleeve keeps the hydrant accessible for service and allows drainage when installed as directed.

  • Top Cap with O-Ring

Seals around the hydrant pipe and fits inside the sleeve to help keep debris out.

  • Durable PVC Sleeve

Keeps the hydrant connection accessible for future service when installed through concrete, asphalt, or a slab.

  • Drainage Hole

Lets water exit the sleeve. Follow the hydrant manufacturer’s drainage instructions to help prevent freezing.

  • Stainless Steel Elbow

Provides a threaded connection for attaching the hydrant.

  • Stainless Steel Hydrant Coupling, Inlet Collar & Inlet Nut

The coupling connects the hydrant to the elbow, the collar helps seal the connection, and the nut holds the assembly in place. An O-ring seals the coupling, and the assembly can be taken apart for service.

Common Questions

Why Buy a Sleeve Instead of Pouring Concrete Around the Hydrant?

If the hydrant needs service later, cutting concrete and excavating around the water line can add labor and disruption. Available for 3/4-inch and 1-inch yard hydrant connections, the sleeve preserves access to the connection so you can typically service or replace the hydrant from above.

Install it right. Protect your hydrant. Don’t dig it up later.

Can I Replace My Yard Hydrant Later Without Digging?

Yes. A properly installed sleeve keeps the hydrant connection accessible. After shutting off the water supply, you can typically unthread and replace the hydrant from above without excavating the yard or supply line.

Can I Use the Sleeve With Concrete, Asphalt, or a Slab?

Yes. The sleeve is designed for installations where concrete, asphalt, or a slab surrounds the hydrant. It keeps the connection accessible for future service or replacement.

Does the Sleeve Replace the Hydrant’s Drainage System?

No. Follow the hydrant manufacturer’s installation instructions and use an approved drainage setup, such as a gravel drain field where permitted, so the hydrant can drain below the frost line.

Can I Install the Sleeve Myself?

If you’re comfortable with underground plumbing, follow the installation instructions for both the sleeve and hydrant. Pay particular attention to the water-line connection and drainage. If you’re unsure, hire a licensed well or plumbing contractor.

How Do I Keep Concrete or Debris Out of the Sleeve?

Keep the sleeve capped or covered during concrete, asphalt, and backfill work. This keeps debris out and helps preserve access to the hydrant connection.

What Size Sleeve Do I Need?

Match the sleeve to the hydrant’s inlet connection. Choose the 3/4-inch sleeve for a 3/4-inch connection or the 1-inch sleeve for a 1-inch connection. Check the inlet size before ordering.

Will My Hydrant Still Drain and Resist Freezing?

Yes, when the hydrant is installed with proper drainage. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions so water can drain after shutoff. That drainage helps protect the hydrant from freezing.
