MCSHD Control Switch Installation

Pressure switching + motor control | Compatible 3-wire pumps

Combines pump pressure switch and pump control box components. This is wired very similar to a standard pressure switch.

Before You Start

Match the Exact Model

Verify pump motor type (three-wire), supply voltage, HP, factory PSI setting and correct run-capacitor size. MCSHD and MCSHDT differ only by top case design (-T = extra tall).

Installation | 4 Simple Steps

  1. Isolate Power. Drain Pressure to Zero.

A qualified installer locks out the breaker, tests for absence of voltage and drains the water system to 0 PSI. Stored capacitor charge is a hazard.

  2. Inspect the Pressure Tap and Tank.

Check for sediment, restrictions and damaged fittings; verify appropriate relief valve and correct pressure-tank air charge.

  3. Mount Using the Swivel Connection.

Connect the integral 1/4-in. NPT swivel union to a standard 1/4-in. pipe nipple. Secure the union / stop feature using the retention screw on the side of the union. Do not twist the case.

  4. Have a Qualified Person Make ALL Connections.

Match the unit-specific color wiring photo, motor leads, line supply, grounding, capacitor and reset for 1 HP and above. Follow motor maker ratings and local codes. Close cover.

Wiring Reference | Professional Use Only

Merrill publishes different wiring examples for 230V 1/2–3/4 HP, 230V 1–5 HP with circuit reset, and a 115V 1/2 HP version. Capacitor values and protective components differ by motor HP.

Use only the model-specific diagram supplied with the switch.

Reference documents: official Merrill Control Switch Brochure (wiring: pages 4–5) and official 230V MCSHD model specifications.

Startup Check | Qualified Installer

  1. 1. Confirm Safe Assembly

Verify enclosure closed; all grounds and motor connections rated, protected and secured. Never operate with cover open.

  2. 2. Check Complete Cycles

Restore power safely; verify pump starts at cut-in and stops at cut-out. Check for leaks and short cycling.

Protective Reset + Capacitor Caution

Reset is present on specified 1 HP and larger models. If protection trips, switch OFF power and diagnose before resetting. Capacitors can remain charged after isolation.

Enclosure Rating
