Pitcher Pump Leather
Replacement Guide

Cup leathers + valve leathers

Two common repairs for traditional cast-iron pitcher pumps with leather components.

Allow the new leathers to set for a few hours before they will seal.

Before you start

Match the replacement

Compare the old leather, cylinder diameter, and mounting-hole size. Use the matching leather replacement for your pump. Rubber seals are incompatible with traditional leather components.

Tools and preparation

Have a screwdriver, wrenches, a clean cloth, and clean water ready. Keep dirt out of the pump during service.

A | Cup leather (plunger)

  1. Remove the plunger

Loosen the pump-cap fastener and lift the plunger assembly out of the pump.

  2. Replace the cup

Remove the cup holder and worn leather. Fit the matching new cup in the original orientation and secure the holder again.

  3. Reassemble and test

Reinstall the plunger and cap. Prime with clean water and check pump operation.

B | Valve leather (base)

  1. Open the pump base

Remove the base bolts and lift the pump body away from the base.

  2. Replace the flat leather

Remove the valve weight and old leather. Clean the seat, fit the new leather, and reattach the weight in its original position.

  3. Reassemble and test

Refit the body, secure the base hardware, and prime with clean water.
