Pressure Relief Valve
Installation Guide

Cold-water well systems

Automatic overpressure protection

The valve opens at its factory-set pressure to help protect the pressure tank, pump, and plumbing.

Before you start

Match the relief valve

Choose the correct inlet size and factory-set relief pressure. The setting must be at least 15 PSI above normal pump shutoff pressure. For a 60 PSI pump shutoff, a 75 PSI relief valve is typically used. Use only on cold-water systems.

Make it safe

Turn off pump power. Open a faucet and drain the system until the gauge reads 0 PSI. Have a wrench and approved thread sealant ready.

Four installation steps

  1. Find the installation point

Locate an available tapping on the tank tee or manifold near the pressure tank. Match the valve inlet size and confirm the threads are clean and undamaged.

  2. Seal and install

Apply thread sealant approved for drinking water to the valve inlet threads. Start the valve by hand, then tighten using the wrench flats. Avoid overtightening and keep the outlet clear.

  3. Direct the discharge

Point the outlet away from people and electrical equipment. Route discharge to a safe, open location as required by local codes. Never cap or plug the outlet.

  4. Restore power and check

Restore pump power and slowly repressurize the system. Inspect for leaks and confirm that normal pump shutoff pressure stays below the relief setting. Check any valve that drips or discharges.

ImportantNever install or remove a relief valve while the system is pressurized. Use only on cold-water well systems. Keep it off water heaters and air systems, and keep the discharge opening clear.
