Replacing E-5000 Yard Hydrant Packing
E-5000 Yard Hydrant
Fix leaking packing around the stem of your E-5000 yard hydrant.
Before you start
Shut off water and relieve pressure
Turn off the water supply and relieve remaining pressure before removing hardware. Have replacement packing ready.
Access the packing from above
You can reach the packing through the top of the hydrant without digging.
Tools you’ll need
One 7/16-inch wrench, two 9/16-inch wrenches, a 3/4-inch box wrench or deep socket, Vise-Grips, a marker, and a utility knife.
How to fix it
-
Shut off water and remove the handle
Turn off the water supply and open the hydrant to relieve pressure, then close it. Remove the handle bolt, handle, and draw straps.
-
Mark and remove the hardware
Mark the lower adjusting nut’s position. Remove the adjusting nuts and pivot connector. Unscrew and remove the packing nut.
-
Add new packing
Leave the old packing in place to avoid damaging the threads. Cut off one-third of the new packing and place it above the old packing. Reinstall and snug the packing nut.
-
Reassemble and test
Return the lower adjusting nut to its mark. Refit the pivot connector, top nut, draw straps, handle, and bolt. Restore the water supply, operate the handle, and check for leaks.
Packing tip
Leave the old packing in place and add only one-third of the new packing at a time. If the hydrant still leaks after testing, repeat the procedure with another one-third piece.
