SPK Pitless Kit
Installation Guide
For Merrill SPK pitless kits — all compatible casing sizes
Confirm your kit model, casing size and burial depth before starting.
Before you start
Confirm casing & kit
Match the kit to the casing size, burial depth and discharge size. Check whether a compatible opening is already present.
Make the site safe
Shut off and verify pump power. Keep debris out of the well and securely support the pump and drop-pipe weight.
Installation | Steps 1–4
Measure discharge depth
Measure from the bottom of the support plate to the center of the discharge elbow, or use the SPK assembly as a measuring stick.
Check or prepare the casing hole
Check for a correctly located, compatible hole. If a new hole is needed, drill at the measured depth and verify its size for the kit.
Mark the top of the casing
Make a notch or mark on the casing top, directly above the discharge hole.
Clamp the discharge hub
Center the hub and gasket over the opening. Clamp securely around the casing to form a watertight seal.
DangerDisconnect pump power and support pump loads. Keep tools and debris out of the open well.
ImportantMerrill specifies a hole no larger than the kit discharge-pipe size. Verify an existing hole before reusing it.
Continue installation | Steps 5–8
Before lowering the pump
Turn the stainless adjusting nut CLOCKWISE until the threaded rod is pulled fully upward. Support the pump and drop pipe.
Finish the connection
Connect, lubricate & lower
Attach pump and drop pipe. Apply anti-seize/gasket lube to the spud gasket and slide-plate slots/back edges; lower carefully.
Align the marks
Line up the mark on the support plate with the mark or notch on top of the casing.
Engage the seal
Turn the stainless adjusting nut COUNTERCLOCKWISE until the spud gasket seals against the inside wall of the casing.
Install the watertight well cap
Install the appropriate watertight cap on top of the casing, following applicable state and local well codes.
DangerNever lift or lower an unsupported pump. Qualified well professionals should handle pump lifting and electrical work.
ImportantCheck the casing seal, watertight cap and connections before returning the well to service.
